Garden sheds

Sheds found on allotment come in many shapes and sizes. Indeed, sheds have fan clubs. There are websites devoted to sheds (or ramshackle structures that pass of sheds) that can be found on allotments.

Sheds can be bought from new from many retail outlets. A cheaper option is to look for garden shed advertisements in the small ad sections of local newspapers. However, you will often be required to dismantle the shed yourself, transport it to your allotment and then re-erect it.

Tip: Ebay is a good place to look for sheds. Do a search for sheds within a certain distance from where you live.

If you are erecting your shed yourself, your first task will be to prepare a base for it. It is unlikely that you will be able to have a concrete base, so you will need to make sure that your shed is supported by sturdy wooden struts. You will also need to make sure that the site is level.

If your shed is on an exposed allotment, you may need to secure your shed with wooden or metal posts driven into the ground at each corner, to prevent your shed blowing over in the wind.

Every year or so, you will need to treat wooden sheds with wood preserver.
